MDPP networks help keep manufacturing in SA

An initial introduction by the Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) has resulted in a new partnership between start-up company Re-Time Pty Ltd and local manufacturer, SMR Automotive Australia Pty Ltd, which will see a new product designed and manufactured in South Australia.

Re-Time Pty Ltd, a spin-out company from Flinders University, approached the MDPP to gain assistance with their light therapy glasses (Re-Time Glasses). Flinders research had shown that their bright light therapy glasses could assist in the treatment of insomnia.

In a 250 hour project, the MDPP developed prototypes for Re-Time Pty Ltd, so they could undertake efficacy trials. The prototypes also gave the company something to demonstrate in front of potential investors. However, the MDPP's role did not stop there.

Mr Ben Olsen, Managing Director of Re-Time Pty Ltd said, "The MDPP assisted Re-Time to identify prospective commercial partners and investors. We've now secured a partnership with a local manufacturer, SMR Automotive Australia Pty Ltd, which will result in the manufacture of the glasses in South Australia".

MDPP win B-HERT award

The MDPP, led by Flinders University, was named Best Research & Development Collaboration in the prestigious annual Business/Higher Education Round Table (B-HERT) Awards.

This is a real testament to the involvement of all partners across the collaboration.

Karen Reynolds elected as Fellow of ATSE

Professor Karen Reynolds has been elected as a 2011 Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).

"It is an enormous honour to be recognised in this way by my peers", said Professor Reynolds.

This recognition follows a number of other recent achievements by Professor Reynolds, who was also last year's Australian Professional Engineer of the Year.

MDPP help lay foundations for accessible housing

The feeling of community engagement and inclusion is extremely important to many, but perhaps none more than those living with a disability.  Alongside this is a desire for independence.

The Woodville West Apartments development offers a new model for accessible housing that will enable those with a disability to live independently in an inclusive community. 

The MDPP has been working closely with partner, Department for Families and Communities (DFC) on this exciting development.

MDPP Breakfast - Opportunities for innovation in medical device development from across the world

On Tuesday 19 July, the MDPP held a free networking breakfast 'Opportunities for innovation in medical device development from across the world'.  Current Adelaide Thinker in Residence, Prof Göran Roos was the guest speaker and provided a comprehensive presentation about the future for medical device development in South Australia.  With 70 attendees from industry, government and research institutions, the breakfast provided a great opportunity to gain a broad perspective of medical development in a manufacturing context.

Medical Device Commercialisation: European Strategies for Growth

On Wednesday 15 June, the Department of Trade and Economic Development - in conjunction with the MDPP, Australian Institute of Commercialisation and AusMedtech – hosted a free presentation with guest speaker, Mr Peter Feuereisel.

Peter is a biomedical engineer with significant worldwide medical device commercialisation experience.

In his presentation, Peter introduced some successful European commercialisation models and clusters, and provided advice on how to export to Europe and how to make use of Intellectual Property as a source of ideas.

Currently in Australia, he is on an exchange program, working with the AIC for the next 6 months.

Shopping simulator leads to better therapy for stroke victims

A virtual reality system that will enable occupational therapists at the Repatriation General Hospital to better assess stroke victims will be launched on today by Minister for Ageing Jennifer Rankine.

The Shopping Simulator has been developed by the Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) at Flinders University in collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation and Aged Care.
