Jo Close is a scientist with an accomplished career in research strategy and management. She has managed major Centres, Institutes and programs within all three leading South Australian universities and undertook formative roles within the local bioscience industry and investment sector. For five years, Jo ran a successful consulting business, primarily facilitating local research organisations to develop strategy and plan major, collaborative research projects.

She also designed and implemented a range of development programs for local and international markets. Her contributions expand to the fundraising and community development areas, where Jo has driven a range of high-impact initiatives. Jo is on Deputy Chairperson for Cure 4 Cystic Fibrosis, a charity that supports advances in research. She is a graduate of the Governor’s Leadership Foundation Program and scholarship recipient of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Aisha joined the MDPP as the Innovations Manager in 2013. She is the key intermediary between applicants, industry, researchers, end-users and government for the project proposals submitted to the Program.

Her role involves:

  • Assessing medical and assistive health technology proposals for development support based on the fund’s strategic aims;
  • Facilitating partnerships between applicants and local manufacturers, distributors, influential end-users, service providers and entrepreneurial support programs for the next stages of commercialisation; and
  • Providing applicants with market intelligence to assist with the development of their value proposition and commercialisation vision for their innovative health technologies.

Previously the Commercial Development Director at Flinders Partners, the commercialisation arm of Flinders University, Aisha has over 10 years of experience working in environmental auditing & consultancy, contract management, technology transfer and commercialisation. In her previous role, Aisha focused on finding a path to market for Flinders technologies in the space of environmental biotechnology, nanotechnology, biochemistry, medical devices, ICT and clean technologies. Aisha was also involved in the management and delivery of state government funded programs which involved the development of grant applications and commercial assessments of medical devices and clean technologies developed by SMEs in South Australia.

As Marketing Manager of the Medical Device Partnering Program and the Medical Device Research Institute (MDRI) at Flinders University, Kelly provides specialist advice and services in relation to marketing, communications and events.

Joining the team in July 2009, she has the privilege of working with some of the leading minds in biomedical engineering, medical devices, health technologies and assisted living. Kelly works closely with researchers, industry, and the clinical community to promote the capabilities, achievements and outcomes of the MDPP and MDRI. Kelly holds a business double degree in Marketing and Management from the University of South Australia and was awarded membership to the Golden Key International Honour Society for outstanding academic achievement. She has experience in domestic and International marketing, project management and business administration, specifically in the Higher Education and Tourism sectors.

In 2011 she was Project Catalyst for the ‘Manufacturing into the future’ residency of the Adelaide Thinkers in Residence program, working closely with Prof Göran Roos.

Debbie was appointed in September 2012 as Administration Officer with the MDRI and MDPP. In this role Debbie assists the team with administration activities such as meeting and event organisation, finance, database management and project tasks. Debbie is also personal assistant to Professor Karen Reynolds, managing her diary and administrative needs. Prior to joining the MDPP, Debbie worked as Executive Assistant to the Managing Director at ACH Group and Personal Assistant/Administrative Supervisor at United Water for 14 years.

Aaron currently works as a technical manager at the MDPP where he is involved in the management, research and development of the biomedical devices at various stages of their product life cycle. Aaron has 8 years of experience in developing medical devices and 6 years of teaching engineering topics at university. His interests are in using his business and general engineering expertise to promote sustainability and improve quality of lives.

He has expertise throughout the whole product lifecycle having previously spent 5 years working as a mechanical engineer turning ideas into finished products. Andrew enjoys the challenges posed by the medical and assistive device field as well as the potential outcomes, we are not just ending up with a device or product but an improvement to people’s quality of life and wellbeing.

Anthony Papageorgiou has a wide experience in mechanical engineering industry. Initially starting off as an apprentice as a fitter, turner and machinist he was able to branch off and complete a bachelor of Mechanical engineering. At Flinders University he specialises in fibre optic sensing, where fibre optics sensing technology is used in various applications. He is also involved with the Medical Device Partnering Program, where he designs, develops and manufactures prototype medical devices for clients.

Dhara joined the MDPP in 2016 as a casual Research Associate. As a PhD Candidate, Biomechanical Engineering (Spine), Dhara brings mechanical engineering expertise as well as experience in running small clinical trials and general R&D. Dhara’s research interests are specifically in spine biomechanics and she specialises in using equipment such as the Six Degree of Freedom Hexapod Robot testing system to understand the combinations of motions and forces that lead to disc herniation. Dhara is also a surgical skills training assistant.
